As VP of Creative at Agency.com in New York, I have been privileged to work on some of the most sophisticated e-commerce, online and wireless solutions for Fortune 500 clients and have managed and developed a staff of up to 90 creatives, including designers and art directors, information architects, copywriters, builders and discipline managers.

Clients included Coca-Cola, British Airways, Goldman Sachs, Gucci, City of NY. (2000-2001).

Creative Director

 

Responsible for conceptual development, artist training, client development, pitch design and delivery. I was hired specifically to design and implement a production pipeline that would increase productivity and lower cost without sacrificing quality. Main responsibilities  included the creation and development of a Broadband and Interactive Television division. Clients included IBM, Novartis, Discovery Channel, Bed Bath & Beyond, Intel / PBS (1998-2000).

 

¤         SZM Studios (Munich, Germany)

VFX Supervisor for Sende-Zentrum-MŸnchen. ProSieben

 

In charge of TV series and Feature Film VFX development team. Worked on weekly TV series for major German networks, including ProSieben and Cable1. Designed and produced special effects for a variety of feature films, from conception and design to execution. Implemented sophisticated camera tracking, beta tested software from major developers. Designed and directed animatronic characters for live puppetry sequences. Designed and animated a ride simulation for the Olympic CommitteeÕs ÒOlympic SpiritÓ  (1996-1998).

 

¤         PARAMOUNT PICTURES, LA

Art Director CGI Team

 

Designed a virtual reality environment for ParamountÕs production ÒVirtuosityÓ, starring Denzel Washington and Rusell Crowe, This was the first ever major feature film whose special effects were designed and produced entirely on a PC platform, utilizing 3DS, After Effects, Elastic Reality and other PC tools. I directed and supervised a team of 15 modellers and animators and was responsible for on-site design and supervision of special effects (1995).

 

¤         Game Designer San Francisco, CA

 

Designed and directed computer games and simulations for major software companies, including EA, Microsoft, Sierra Online, Stormfront Studios and Br¿derbund. Developed 3D movies for ViacomÕs ÒStar Trek: Deep Space NineÓ CD Rom title. Was reponsible for technical supervision, design and production work. Created the first motion-capture game in game history (Tony LaRussa II) as well as industry innovations like claymation, blue screen, stop-motion and other procedures then unknown in the game industry. (1988-1994)

 

¤         Filmmaker / Theatre Director Mexico City, Lima, Perœ, LA, NY

 

(1980-1988)          

Was script-writer and director of three short plays on the life of the Aztecs for the ÒInstituto Nacional IndigenistaÓ. Was lighting and special effects instructor for the INI. Conducted an Acting Workshop under the auspices of UNAM (National University of Mexico). Was invited by BARD College to conduct a film direction seminar at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts.

Was Art Director for the film ORBIT which is now on permanent exhibit at St. Louis Zoological ParkÕs Living World Pavilion. Directed the simulation film ÒEscape from Planet EarthÓ for IWERKS, which premiered at Liseberg park, in Gothenburg, Sweden.

 

 

¤         Film and Theatre Director / Set Designer Mexico City, Perœ, Canada

 

(1970-1975)           Formed the group ÒLos ProfetasÓ with Juan Manuel Gonzales and Abraham Laboriel, and staged music shows with Alejandro Jodorowsky; ÒHistoria de un AmorÓ and ÒPanic TalesÓ. Directed my own experimental as well as traditional plays at ÒCafŽ-Teatro RomaÓ in exchange for food and lodging.

Assistant to Art Director for Dennis Hopper ÒThe Last MovieÓ, assistant to Art Director for Robert Altman ÒA Cold Day in the ParkÓ (Vancouver).

Produced and directed over 40 fiction films and documentaries and over 200 TV commercials and print campaigns for major international advertising agencies.

 

¤         Film Teacher / Lecturer. Perœ, MŽxico

 

(1965- 1968)          Taught filmmaking, lighting and photography under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. Managed and programmed the Art Cinema in Lima. Worked with MAGNUM photographer JosŽ Casals and shot my first 35mm. Film. Founded the first big scale film studio in Lima. Got hooked on theatre forever after working as a still photographer for Juan JosŽ Gurrola in the operetta ÒLandrœÓ. Shot a one year Florsheim campaign for Life Magazine and with British Top Model Pixie Hopkins for Teran Publicidad.

 

¤         Formal Education

 

MFA in New Media from Danube University, Krems, Austria

Studied Art and Design at San JosŽ City College, minor in ceramics. Dropped out after a year to pursue my interest in film, which did not exist as a career in American Universities at the time.

Studied for a year in La Esmeralda, Mexico City, under the dean of Mexican painters, Santos Balmori. Graduated from the High School of Colegio Mexico at age 15.
